They are basically inert materials (powders or grits) of various origins, to be added to the resins to modify their characteristics (such as viscosity) without altering their chemical reaction. The addition of thickeners to the resin consequently leads to an increase in the volume of the compound, followed in turn by a reduction in the percentage of resin in the mass.
