Gelcoat / Primers
Gelcoat, as well as primers, are composed by a resin, which determines its base, inert fillers with optionally pigments that give color and consistency, and also by an agent which gives it the necessary thixotropy; this main characteristic allows the application in strong thicknesses, even on vertical surfaces. They are all two-component products, and they’re applied with a brush or by spraying in thicknesses ranging from 0.5 to 1 mm. Molds gelcoat are applied to the model to reproduce, previously treated with release agents, then continuing with the mold’s stratification in order to obtain a perfect, and lasting over time, inner surface; molding gelcoats (to protect composite manufactured good’s surface) are instead directly applied into the mold, always treated with release waxes, and faithfully reproduce the surface. Both gelcoat and primers normally derived from two different families of resins, epoxy and polyester one.
